Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Jorge Bergoglio was elected two weeks later and took papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
In his pontificate spanning twelve years, Pope Francis emphasized the divine mercy of God and called us to reach out to the poor and marginalized. He upheld the dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death, and was staunchly opposed to abortion, euthanasia, and other expressions of a “throw away” culture. He stressed that the family is founded on marriage as the union of a man and a woman, and he strongly criticized gender ideology, while encouraging compassion for all people. He affirmed our shared stewardship of the Earth in his encyclical Laudato si. He reminded us that we are each called to participate in the essential mission of the Church—to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the whole world!
A Prayer for a Pope Who Has Died
O God, faithful rewarder of souls,
grant that your departed servant Pope Francis,
whom you made successor of Peter and shepherd of your Church,
may happily enjoy for ever in your presence in heaven
the mysteries of your grace and compassion,
which he faithfully ministered on earth.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
