Defend Us in Battle: Chants for Spiritual Warfare is the debut album of Carolingia, the ensemble of the Gregorian Chant Academy. Eighteen Gregorian chants — including the Dies Irae, the Te Deum, the solemn Salve Regina, and an original setting of the Prayer to St Michael the Archangel — are performed in the robust vox virilis tradition advocated by St Bernard of Clairvaux, with select tracks featuring medieval organum and vocal drones. These are chants whose text, music and performance are intended to inspire and encourage the Church Militant to engage and persevere in spiritual warfare: pursuing the will of God and striving for holiness in one's vocation. Releasing September 29 on the Feast of St Michael the Archangel, this album is designed not merely for listening but for prayer — a sacred arsenal for the Catholic home.
