Product Overview

Three Women and the Lord presents three key figures in Saint Luke's Gospel: Mary Magdalen, the unnamed woman who washed the feet of Jesus with her tears, and Mary of Bethany.

As Adrienne von Speyr meditates on the Gospel passages about these three women, she explores the particular, personal mission that the Lord gave each one and links it with one of the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and love.

Through the stories of these women, von Speyr demonstrates that every person who encounters Jesus and receives his mercy is changed by him and given a unique way to reveal his identity as Savior and Lord.

Editorial Reviews

"Adrienne Von Speyr is one of the greatest mystics of the twentieth century. Her insights into the Bible offer a treasure trove of wisdom."
— Fr. Donald Calloway, M.I.C., Author, Champions of the Rosary

"I received far more from Adrienne, theologically, than she from me. Her work appears far more important to me than mine. I am convinced that when her works are made available, those who are in a position to judge will concur with me about their value and will thank God that he has granted such graces to the Church in our time."
— Fr. Hans Urs von Balthasar, Author, First Glance at Adrienne von Speyr

One of the best books I've ever read

Posted by Fr. Thomas McGuire on Nov 15th 2024

I had this book on my shelf for some time and finally started to read it. It is a lectio divina type of meditation on three woman who encounter the Lord: Mary Magdalene, the repentant woman at the home of a Pharisee where Jesus is dining, and Mary of Bethany. The first reflection is good, the second much better, and the third is nothing short of mystical. I finished reading it on retreat which made it a memorable retreat. Of course, I ordered some more books by Adrienne von Spyer. The ones that I, by far, get the most out of are the ones on which she comments on Scripture. I have a few others that are more catechetical in nature that seem okay but her prayerful insights into Scripture are amazing to me. It's as if she is reading the mind of the evangelist, or of Jesus and the persons that are encountering him. I am ordering a third or fourth copy because I've given a couple away.
